Backcountry, one of the largest online outdoor retailers in the United States, offers a real, ongoing thank-you to the military community: 20% off eligible full-price items. The discount runs through Backcountry’s official ID.me program page, which states plainly, “We Honor All Heroes,” and promises “an exclusive 20% off all eligible full-price items in your cart” to verified members of hero communities, including military members. If you hike, camp, ski, climb, or just love good outdoor gear, this is a discount worth setting up before your next big purchase.
Backcountry carries gear and apparel from more than 500 brands, including household names in outdoor clothing and equipment, plus its own Basin + Range and Stoic lines. A 20% saving on a jacket, a pair of boots, or a full camping setup adds up fast, and because the discount applies to eligible full-price items, it is most valuable on the gear you would buy at full price anyway. Unlike a one-day Veterans Day freebie, this is a standing program you can use whenever you need new kit, as long as you verify your status through ID.me first.
The key detail is the word “eligible.” Backcountry’s program page is clear that the 20% applies to eligible full-price items in your cart, so sale and clearance items are outside the deal. That is a fair trade: you get a strong discount on current-season gear, and you should compare it against any sale price before checkout to make sure you are taking the better deal.
Who is Eligible for the Backcountry Military Discount?
Backcountry’s ID.me program page lists Military Members among its eligible hero communities, alongside Healthcare Workers, First Responders, Educators, and Government Employees. For this article, the group that matters is military members: if you serve or have served in the U.S. military, you can verify your status through ID.me and unlock the discount.
Verification is handled by ID.me, the identity service that confirms your military status on Backcountry’s behalf. You will need an ID.me account, and you will need to prove your military affiliation through it. Once ID.me confirms you, Backcountry issues your discount. Because ID.me does the checking, you do not need to email Backcountry your paperwork or call customer service to prove you served.
How Much Military Discount Does Backcountry Provide?
Backcountry provides 20% off all eligible full-price items in your cart to verified military members. That is the headline number, confirmed on Backcountry’s own ID.me program page, and it applies across the outdoor gear and apparel Backcountry sells, as long as the items are eligible and full-priced.
To put the saving in real terms: 20% off a $250 jacket is $50 back in your pocket, and 20% off a $400 camping setup is $80 saved. The discount is per-order savings on eligible items, so a bigger cart of eligible gear means a bigger total saving. Just remember the limit: the 20% does not apply to items that are already marked down, and some brands or products may be excluded as ineligible. Backcountry’s program page says “eligible full-price items” for a reason, so if an item does not show the discount at checkout, it is likely excluded, and the sale price may still be the better deal.
How to Claim the Backcountry Military Discount
Follow these steps to claim your 20% Backcountry military discount:
- Go to Backcountry’s official ID.me program page (https://www.backcountry.com/info/id-me-program) and look for the “Verify with ID.me” button.
- Select “Verify with ID.me” and continue with the Hero Community option for military members.
- Sign in to your existing ID.me account, or create one if you do not have one yet, and complete the military status verification steps ID.me asks for.
- Once your status is verified, your discount is unlocked. Shop Backcountry as normal and add eligible full-price items to your cart.
- Check your cart before checkout to confirm the 20% discount has been applied to your eligible items, then complete your purchase.
One practical tip: verify your ID.me status before you start shopping, not after you have already filled your cart. That way you can see discounted prices as you browse, and you will know immediately which items are eligible and which are excluded. If you run into trouble with verification, ID.me’s own support team handles eligibility questions, since ID.me is the service doing the checking.

Backcountry offers free standard shipping on U.S. orders over $69, which pairs nicely with the military discount on a larger gear order. Check the current shipping terms at checkout.

The item is probably ineligible or already discounted. Try another eligible full-price item, and contact Backcountry or ID.me support if you believe your verification is not working.
